●Long Term Substitute for Northern York County School District; Instructional Assistant with Mechanicsburg Area School District; Online ESL Teacher for students in Japan, India, Singapore, and Ukraine; online college and elementary tutor for Economics, Biology, and English Language Arts ●I understand why I want to teach, simply because I love teaching and I want to encourage lifelong learning in my students. When I dive a bit deeper and ponder the idea of my philosophy of teaching, I immediately recall my third-grade teacher. I remember third grade because this teacher made a strong and positive impact on me. This is exactly how I want to be remembered by my students. There are lessons that I learned from my third-grade teacher that I observe today. So, how do I become that type of teacher, the teacher that, if my students remember, will be considered as they reflect upon what we have learned together? This is significant, the idea that we learn together. I am confident that I will help my students learn new and useful knowledge, yet I am more certain that my students will teach me pieces of remarkable information along the way. That is the beauty of teaching – the fact that my students and I will learn together and from one another. I want to be a teacher who helps students find their passion in life. I believe that all students bring valuable elements of themselves that make them unique. All students can learn they just have to be provided with the most appropriate learning environment that is conducive to their individual learning style. Most importantly, there must be a strong and faithful bond created between teacher and student. My philosophy of teaching outlines how I will fulfill the needs and interests of my students. As my students’ teacher I am their facilitator who will support them in their search for their passion. What does this look like? First, students must be in a comfortable community-based environment. They must feel a connection among each other and me. Within our classroom, we will establish rules and expectations together so that each one of us has contributed to our classroom community. When each student offers his or her suggestion, they have created an individual connection to their classroom. As a result, they can enter the classroom feeling that it is their “home away from home” and feel comfortable, and confident, sharing their ideas as we learn together. Secondly, our classroom will be created to support an inquiry-based learning atmosphere. Students are curious. I want to strengthen and enhance their curiosity so that my students become, and continue to be, enthusiastic about learning. Within our classroom I will ensure that students can openly share their answers. Instead of answering their questions for them, I will encourage further discussion by answering their questions with more questions and invite their classmates to participate in the conversation. Furthermore, it is not always about providing the correct answer, it is more about how my students reached their conclusions. Another way to enhance inquiry is to deliver project-based learning where our class is engaging in more projects and explorations rather than simply lecturing. Another way to support student thinking is to provide opportunities for my students to reflect. It is just as important for students to have time for reflection as it is for teachers to engage in reflection. Our days will allow time for students to reflect on what they learned and how they learned. Focusing on how they learned a concept will help my students to grow and become better learners. We will ask one another questions such as, what helped me to understand this content? What methods did not help me learn this content? Effective reflection will be a part of our everyday learning. Reflection will help mold the next lesson that we conquer together. My students and I will learn together. I understand my students will shape the learning that occurs in many distinct ways. I will be certain to take a step back and observe how my students are learning while adhering to clear learning objectives that I have set forth. My students can take ownership in their learning and from here, I can encourage further engagement, while increasing their enthusiasm to discover more along the way. One effective means to accomplishing this is to provide the time for my students to explore what truly interests or excites them. This can be implemented with “Genius Hour”. During this project, students can dive into their interests and perhaps learn what they want to do with their lives. Another strategic move within a lesson is to incorporate real-life connections to the material. Providing opportunities for students to explore the world outside the classroom, while within our safe learning haven, is an approach I will implement daily. In addition to reflection, assessments also play a key role in shaping the next lesson. Learning how to effectively assess my students during a lesson is critical to their continued learning. By gauging how my students are responding to questions during lesson delivery, I can assess how well, or how not so well, they understand the material. Each student will exhibit their own unique level of understanding. I can base the next lesson on how my students respond to the previous lesson. Did my students understand the learning objectives? Do they need more time to understand? Should we repeat the lesson? How do I continue to measure my effectiveness as a teacher? Reflections on each lesson and each day I spend with my students are critical pieces to my personal growth and development as a successful teacher. In addition to effectively assessing student performance during a lesson, communicating with parents is another method in which to evaluate my practice. As a teacher I have a responsibility to provide consistent opportunity for parent opinion and feedback. I understand that my students’ parents know them the best. Learning from the parents is truly important in providing the most appropriate realm that supports each student’s success in learning. Another method to measure the value of my teaching practice is to regularly collaborate with my colleagues. I will be open to constructive feedback from my fellow educational peers. I will also provide support and encouragement for my colleagues. Collaboration is key to success in the world of a teacher. Overall, my teaching philosophy centers on the well being of my students. I will focus on collaborating with my students and their parents to provide the most effective learning atmosphere. To be able to provide for my students in the best way possible I know that I must understand myself – my own “lived world” so that I can effectively help my students to understand their world. Exercising a clear philosophy of teaching can lead to a change in my teaching behavior and support my professional and personal growth as an educator and as an individual. “
